Microsoft Launches Secure Future Initiative to Counter Rising Cyber Threats
In response to the escalating speed, scale, and complexity of cyberattacks worldwide, Microsoft has unveiled its Secure Future Initiative (SFI). The initiative comprises three key pillars aimed at combatting cyber threats more effectively and safeguarding critical infrastructure and individuals. These pillars include AI-based cyber defenses, advances in fundamental software engineering, and an advocacy for stronger adherence to international norms that protect civilians from cyber threats.
Recent years have witnessed cybercriminals and nation-state attackers employing increasingly aggressive and innovative techniques, specifically targeting critical infrastructure organizations globally. Shockingly, 40% of all nation-state attacks in the past two years focused on critical infrastructure, posing substantial risks to nations and communities alike. Moreover, there has been a staggering 200% increase in ransomware attempts, with small and vulnerable organizations, such as hospitals, schools, and local governments, becoming prime targets.
Peter Maquera, CEO of Microsoft Philippines, highlighted the rapid digital transformation experienced by the Philippines, with internet penetration reaching 73.1% in 2021. Consequently, the country has also witnessed a rise in cyber threats, ranking as the fourth most targeted by cybercrime. To address these growing concerns, Microsoft’s SFI aims to offer advanced cybersecurity solutions to protect digital assets and critical infrastructure in the Philippines. The company is dedicated to constructing an AI-based cyber shield that will safeguard customers and countries worldwide. Leveraging its global network of AI-based data centers and advanced AI models, Microsoft can harness the power of AI to advance cybersecurity measures. As part of the SFI, Microsoft will expedite its efforts on multiple fronts, using AI to enhance threat intelligence for faster detection and analysis of cyber threats.
To tackle the global shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals and bridge the demand gap faced by the Philippines, Microsoft will deploy AI-driven solutions to diminish cyberattacks at machine speed. Microsoft’s Security Copilot, which combines a large language model with a security-specific model, will generate valuable insights and recommendations from complex data, enabling analysts to be more responsive and efficient.
Alongside AI capabilities, the SFI will drive forward innovative developments in fundamental software engineering. Microsoft aims to revolutionize its software development process by integrating cybersecurity protection against emerging threat patterns throughout the coding, testing, deployment, and operation stages. Over the next year, Microsoft plans to enhance the default configurations for multifactor authentication (MFA), thereby bolstering the default settings for a broader range of customer services. By elevating these default settings, Microsoft seeks to reduce the risk of successful cyberattacks and fortify overall security.
The SFI encompasses several additional crucial measures, including reinforcing identity protection against sophisticated attacks, accelerating vulnerability response, and security updates for cloud platforms. Microsoft intends to halve the time it takes to mitigate cloud vulnerabilities while promoting more transparent reporting across the technology sector. This comes as the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group reported a 152% increase in cybercrimes within Metro Manila during the first half of 2023, with at least 6,250 incidents reported to the police.
In advocating for the SFI, Microsoft asserts that stronger AI defenses and engineering advancements should be complemented by a robust application of international norms in cyberspace. The company supports efforts to unite governments, the private sector, and civil society to advance international norms governing the behavior of states and non-state actors in cyberspace. By endorsing and reinforcing key norms and red lines, such as refraining from implanting software vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure networks or compromising the security of cloud services, Microsoft aims to promote greater accountability for nation-states that violate these norms through strong, public, multilateral, and unified attributions from governments.
