Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI Respond to Biden’s Call for AI Accountability

Big names in the tech industry including Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have responded to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) call for public commentary on AI accountability. Over 1,400 varied responses were received, including suggestions for the crafting of policies addressing AI assessment, certification, and other trust-building mechanisms. The aim is to inspire confidence in AI systems and regulate their usage effectively through a comprehensive framework. One-page comments were received from CEO of Splyt.co, Luis Barrera, stating that using current data and privacy rules as a guide could make regulation easier for everyone. Salesforce, the customer relationship platform (CRM), has encouraged clear AI and chatbot system user notification and consent requirements for person-simulating products. Microsoft suggested six regulatory recommendations in their 16-page commentary. Google’s 33-page response included several points related to AI regulation, whereas OpenAI’s six-page response provided suggestions based on its current processes. These responses bring to light the complexities of AI regulation and the delicate balance between innovation and accountability.
