Microsoft Developing AI Chip to Compete With Nvidia

Date:

Nvidia is the industry leader when it comes to supplying AI server chips. Companies around the world are buying these chips, and OpenAI estimates that it will need over thirty thousand Nvidia A100 GPUs for the commercialization of ChatGPT. The demand for these high-end AI chips is evident as the prices for Nvidia’s latest H100 GPUs are reaching sky-high prices, selling for more than forty thousand dollars on eBay. To capitalize on this market, Microsoft is reportedly working on its own AI chips, codenamed Athena, which could challenge Nvidia’s position. According to sources, Microsoft is planning to make these chips available inside the Microsoft and OpenAI environment as early as next year. Microsoft also has a strategy for future generations of AI chips.
