Microsoft and Paige Collaborate to Create World’s Largest AI Model for Cancer Detection
In a groundbreaking partnership, tech giant Microsoft and digital pathology provider Paige have joined forces to develop the world’s largest image-based artificial intelligence (AI) models to combat cancer. This revolutionary AI model surpasses any existing image-based AI models in terms of scale and complexity, featuring billions of parameters.
With the ability to capture the intricate nuances of cancer, this AI model will serve as the foundation for cutting-edge clinical applications and computational biomarkers that push the boundaries of oncology and pathology. It has the capability to detect both common cancers and rare forms of cancer that are notoriously challenging to diagnose.
According to Desney Tan, Vice President and Managing Director of Microsoft Health Futures, We are creating new AI models that will enable unprecedented insights into the pathology of cancer. Unleashing the power of AI is a game changer in advancing healthcare to improve lives.
Paige, a global leader in end-to-end digital pathology solutions and clinical AI, spearheaded the development of the initial large foundation model. This model utilized over one billion images from half a million pathology slides spanning various cancer types. As the next phase of development, Paige plans to incorporate up to four million digitized microscopy slides encompassing multiple cancer types from their extensive petabyte-scale archive of clinical data.
Leveraging Microsoft’s advanced supercomputing infrastructure, Paige will train the AI technology at scale and ultimately deploy it to hospitals and laboratories worldwide using Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing platform.
Razik Yousfi, Senior Vice President of Technology at Paige, expressed confidence in the significant advancements they will achieve in cancer imaging: We strongly believe we will significantly advance the state-of-the-art in cancer imaging. Through the development of this model, we will help improve the lives of the millions of people who are affected by cancer every day.
This collaboration between Microsoft and Paige represents a major step forward in the battle against cancer. By harnessing the capabilities of AI and the vast amount of clinical data available, this AI model has the potential to revolutionize cancer detection and contribute to saving lives.
As the development of this AI model progresses, the healthcare industry eagerly anticipates breakthroughs that will enhance diagnostic accuracy, accelerate treatment decisions, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. With Microsoft and Paige leading the way, the possibilities are immense and offer hope for a future where cancer detection becomes even more accurate and effective.
