Meta Platforms Implements New Policy for AI-Generated Content Labeling

Date:

Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) has announced a new policy that will introduce labels for AI-generated content on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. This decision comes after feedback from Meta’s Oversight Board, recommending a broader approach to manipulated media.

In response to the recommendations, Meta has expanded the scope of its policy to include photos and audio, in addition to videos, when it comes to labeling AI-generated content. The company has stated that it will no longer automatically remove unlabeled AI content, but instead, it will add the necessary labels itself.

The Oversight Board advised against removing manipulated media that does not violate Meta’s Community Standards, suggesting a more lenient approach through labeling with context. Meta has been working with industry partners to establish common technical standards for identifying AI content and will introduce Made with AI labels on AI-generated videos, audios, and images.

Starting in May 2024, Meta plans to begin labeling AI-generated content and will cease removing content solely based on its manipulated video policy in July. The company aims to provide informational labels and context for AI-generated content unless it violates its policies.

This move by Meta is crucial as concerns about AI’s potential to spread misinformation continue to grow. By introducing labels for AI-generated content, Meta is addressing these concerns and taking steps to mitigate the impact of manipulated media on its platforms in a more transparent manner.

Overall, Meta’s decision to label AI-generated content reflects its commitment to combating misinformation and providing users with more context when engaging with content on its platforms.
