The technology, called ChatGPT, will be tested in three months, with beta testing starting this week solely for users in America. The automaker has expressed its intention to then roll out the software on a broader scale after it has been successfully integrated.
The introduction of ChatGPT into Mercedes-Benz vehicles marks a major step forward for automakers’ use of AI. The well-known Hey Mercedes assistant function will now become much more sophisticated, transforming basic commands such as adjusting car settings or checking the weather into full conversations with AI technology, including follow-up questions, to provide a more comprehensive and personalized interaction.
Mercedes-Benz has also shared its plans to explore plugins for ChatGPT that could allow the AI to provide assistance with other tasks such as making restaurant reservations or booking movie tickets, by natural language processing.
To ensure safety, the ChatGPT function will only be voice-activated, meaning that it can be used without causing distractions for drivers. It can even answer phone calls, providing a hands-free solution while driving. To keep user data safe, Mercedes-Benz has partnered with Microsoft and will be using Azure for the enterprise-grade protection of sensitive user data. According to Azure, conversations will be stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, anonymized and analyzed for user convenience. However, there may be concerns around privacy, with AI constantly listening.
The three-month beta testing phase for ChatGPT in Mercedes-Benz vehicles is expected to begin rolling out imminently. The technology’s integration will ultimately revolutionize the in-car experience for drivers, thanks to novel voice-controlled features and improved conversational interactions.
