Mercedes-Benz has recently begun testing the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot in its production pipeline, using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the quality and efficiency of its vehicles. Last month, we covered the collaboration between Mercedes and Microsoft, as both companies are partners with OpenAI and utilize Microsoft Cloud services.
The implementation of ChatGPT allows production employees to engage with production data in a natural and intuitive manner, eliminating the need for complex programming functions. Additionally, OpenAI’s chatbot assists quality engineers in identifying and rectifying faults by simplifying the presentation of production-relevant data and grouping information accordingly.
The foundation of ChatGPT lies in the Azure OpenAI Service, which takes advantage of Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform. This enables real-time processing of production data that remains securely stored within the MO360 Data Platform. Furthermore, ChatGPT is capable of expediting strategic decision-making throughout the entire production chain.
The integration of ChatGPT into the MO360 digital production ecosystem, introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 2020, signifies the brand’s commitment to digitalize and optimize production processes using smart tools and data-driven solutions. By leveraging AI, Mercedes-Benz continues to push the boundaries of production capabilities.
To simplify the workflow of production employees, Mercedes-Benz has developed the MO360 Support Bot, an AI-powered digital assistant. This support bot engages with employees via a user-friendly self-service portal accessible on any device, including tablets, smartphones, and computers. The bot offers friendly and natural clarifications, as well as answers to questions.
Microsoft collaborates with Mercedes-Benz in implementing ChatGPT, utilizing the generative AI model running on Azure OpenAI. This ensures the highest levels of security, privacy, and reliability for both the company and its employees. Mercedes-Benz remains in control of the IT processes behind the scenes, with employees’ voice inputs anonymized within the Azure cloud. Importantly, production data remains securely stored within the MO360 Data Platform, reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s dedication to data protection.
Azure OpenAI Service grants access to OpenAI’s advanced language models, including GPT-4, GPT-3, as well as services Codex and DALL-E, through REST APIs, Python SDK, or a web-based interface in Azure OpenAI. These models have numerous applications, such as content generation, summarization, semantic search, and natural language to code translation.
The integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Mercedes-Benz’s production pipeline exemplifies the brand’s commitment to embracing AI technologies. By empowering production employees with the aid of AI, Mercedes-Benz aims to improve efficiency and quality while ensuring data privacy and protection. This partnership between Mercedes-Benz, Microsoft, and OpenAI represents a significant step forward in the automotive industry’s digital transformation journey.
