Meeting of Microsoft, Google, OpenAI CEOs and US VP Kamala Harris to Discuss AI Risks

Date:

The potential risks and misuse of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools have become a major concern, raising the need for official intervention on the matter. To address the issue, the chief executives from technology companies Microsoft (Satya Nadella), Google (Sundar Pichai), OpenAI (Sam Altman), and Anthropic (Dario Amodei) have been invited to meet with Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris. Initially, the meeting was set to take place on Thursday, May 4th, also involving team members of President Joe Biden including Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Director of the National Economic Council, Lael Brainard and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

An official invitation was acquired by Reuters, in which Biden expressed his need to ensure the safety of a product before it is available to public usage. This conversation comes after Tesla’s Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak had signed a letter asking for a pause in AI research for the current year. It was also made known that even Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella have previously talked about the dangers of improper usage of AI, in addition to CNN’s interview with AI’s ‘Godfather’ Geoffrey Hinton.

Following this, the Biden Administration has invited public comments on the possible regulations and dangers of AI. Furthermore, President Biden has chosen to remain cautiously optimistic, as he has yet to make a judgement on the issue. Some countries have already begun to restrict the use of products like ChatGPT due to its potential privacy concerns.
