Marvel Criticized for Using AI in ‘Secret Invasion’ Opening Credits

Marvel Studios’ latest TV series, Secret Invasion, has faced criticism for using artificial intelligence (AI) to create the title cards in its opening sequence. The imagery has been described as ugly and repulsive by viewers on social media, who have also lamented Marvel’s supposed treatment of human visual effects (VFX) artists. However, at least one Twitter user has noted that VFX and motion graphics subdivision Method Studios was credited for creating the sequence, and that human artists’ names were listed among the team. Secret Invasion director and executive producer Ali Selim confirmed that Method Studios used AI to design the opening titles, saying AI was chosen because it reflects some of the series’ themes, in which shapeshifting aliens called Skrulls masquerade as human beings. The saga comes amid tension between Hollywood studios and creative unions over payments and streaming rights, with both the Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA union facing disputes with production houses.
