Malaysia Upskills Workforce for AI Demands, Launches First AI Faculty

Date:

The government is prioritizing the enhancement of local workforce skills, especially in Artificial Intelligence (AI), to meet the labor demands arising from recent large-scale investments in the country.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir emphasized the significance of the newly established AI Faculty at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as a key indicator of the nation’s readiness in this industry.

Zambry mentioned that AI is not just a technology but will have a significant impact across various sectors such as electrical and electronics (E&E). The demand for skilled workers in E&E alone is expected to reach 30,000, potentially increasing to 45,000.

The minister expressed optimism that within the next four to five years, Malaysia will be able to meet the investment demands. He highlighted the importance of providing skilled workers in AI on par with other countries to attract more investments.

Zambry also pointed out that the trade tensions between the United States and China have indirectly benefited Malaysia by increasing foreign direct investments. He emphasized the necessity of adapting to changing times and aligning the workforce’s skills with evolving industry needs to support the Madani Malaysian Economy framework.

Earlier reports indicated that Malaysia’s first AI Faculty is set to be inaugurated on May 10 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre. The Bachelor of Science in AI degree received approval in January, with the first batch of students scheduled to commence studies in October.
