Malawi has recently launched the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) with the support of several U.S. universities. The establishment of this center is a significant milestone for Malawi as it strives to advance in innovation and technology. The aim of the center, with the backing of prestigious U.S. institutions such as Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Tech University, Morehouse College, Colorado University, Georgia Southern University, Clemson University, New York University, and Mercer University, is to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and STEAM education to drive socio-economic development.
The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and STEAM at the Malawi University of Science and Technology will provide educational, technical, policy, and strategy products and services in emerging technologies, focusing on AI. This initiative aims to equip individuals and organizations with the necessary knowledge and skills to thrive in the digital era. The center’s partnerships with renowned U.S. universities grant it access to invaluable expertise and resources.
The introduction of AI has sparked global debates, particularly concerning its impact on employment. While some fear job losses, others argue that it creates new opportunities and requires a skilled workforce. Zipangani Vokhiwa, the leader of the project and a science professor at Mercer University, recognizes the advantages and disadvantages of AI. He emphasizes the importance of embracing digitalization and ensuring that Malawi remains at the forefront of technological advancements. The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and STEAM will play a crucial role in facilitating the responsible use of AI, addressing potential downsides through knowledge sharing, and developing policy and regulatory frameworks.
Malawi’s Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, acknowledges the transformative potential of AI while emphasizing the need to address its ethical and regulatory aspects. The government looks to the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and STEAM for expertise in developing policies that govern the responsible use of AI.
Malawi also recognizes the significance of actively participating in shaping the future of AI at a regional level. With the Southern African Development Community already addressing the issue of AI ethics, Malawi aims to adopt regional guidelines and collaborate with member states to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI.
The launch of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and STEAM marks Malawi’s entry into exploring the opportunities presented by new technologies while safeguarding the interests of its citizens. This development aligns with the country’s ambition to foster innovation and technological advancement, positioning Malawi as a key player in the global AI landscape.
