Have you ever played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and felt like the conversations between NPCs could use some more life? If so, you might be interested in the new Skyrim mod called ChatGPT. This mod uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT language model to give an AI-driven boost to Skyrim’s non-player characters. Now, instead of the same old dialogue, NPCs can have conversations with players that feel more dynamic and engaging.
ChatGPT takes advantage of natural language processing and provides NPCs with contextual responses to players. For example, when gamers interact with an NPC, that character can take cues from previous interactions and make their replies more relevant and interesting. It’s similar to talking to a real human—who can not only remember context but also adapt to conversations in real-time. Needless to say, it adds a lot of depth and unexpectedness to the game.
In the background, ChatGPT processes large amounts of language data to help NPCs stay in character. Conversations flow more easily now, as NPCs can use appropriate responses for any given situation. While some people may find it a little eerie, its definitely a welcome upgrade from the one-liner jokes from NPCs from previous Elder Scrolls games.
Developmental biologist Magnus Bäck created the mod as a way to practice his coding skills. Magnus is a big fan of Elder Scrolls and thought that ChatGPT’s language model would be the perfect way to level up the game’s NPCs. He learnt a lot while coding the mod, and released it for free to the Unity Asset Store.
ChatGPT is a great example of how machine learning can make gaming experiences more immersive. OpenAI’s language model makes it possible for AI to produce natural language at a level that was once unimaginable. It’s this kind of cutting-edge technology that will be essential to the future of immersive gaming.
