Two lawyers in Manhattan federal court may face punishment after an AI-powered chatbot called ChatGPT produced fictitious legal research that was included in a court filing. Attorneys Steven A. Schwartz and Peter LoDuca used the groundbreaking program to support a case against Colombian airline Avianca for an injury incurred in 2019, but the chatbot suggested cases that did not exist and that involved airlines with fake names. Microsoft invested around $1bn in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, which has alarmed some experts who believe artificial intelligence could pose risks to society. The judge hearing the case has yet to decide on sanctions.
