Lawyer Slammed by Judge for Using Fake ChatGPT Cases in Court Hearing

Date:

A lawyer attempting to use fake ChatGPT-generated cases during a hearing was reprimanded by the judge and may face legal action. Steven Schwartz used ChatGPT to create examples that would support his argument in a personal injury case against an airline company. However, he did not verify the authenticity of the examples or even their existence. When pressed to provide copies of said cases, he turned to ChatGPT again to generate the details and filed them as attachments to his documents, even including screenshots of his conversation with ChatGPT. The judge was not amused and ordered Schwartz to explain his misconduct or face sanctions. The legal case in question is still pending.

On a separate occasion, ChatGPT caused problems for students when a professor used it to check if any papers were plagiarized. However, ChatGPT was not designed to detect AI content and spelled the AI’s name wrong in his email. This occurrence highlights the importance of understanding technology before relying on it.
