Kinetica, a relational database provider for online analytical processing (OLAP) and real-time analytics, has harnessed the power of OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology to allow developers to make queries to the database using natural language processing.
By integrating ChatGPT into the front-end of Kinetica Workbench, users can ask questions in natural language about proprietary data sets stored in the database. ChatGPT then processes these natural language queries and converts them into accurate Structured Query Language (SQL). This means that users do not need to know specific columns in order to run queries and can still get the desired information. Kinetica also states that their database is capable of continuously ingesting streaming data to provide the most up-to-date real-time analytics.
Vectorization, a process of storing data in blocks called vectors, is also an important feature in Kinetica’s databases which enables faster processing on a smaller compute footprint. Vectorization is made possible through graphical processing units (GPUs) and CPUs, allowing reliable implementation of SQL-92 and supporting text search, time series analysis, location intelligence and graph analytics.
The integration of ChatGPT into Kinetica streamlines the user experience and allows for improved insights from data. Bradley Shimmin, Chief Analyst at Omdia Research, notes that this is one of the first database companies to integrate ChatGPT or other generative AI features and could be beneficial for database administrators and data scientists. Moreover, Kinetica plans to work with other natural language query providers to increase the reach of its technology.
Kinetica is a Berkeley, California based company that produces real-time analytics, location intelligence, and other technologies. Its main customers include the US Defense Agencies, Entertainment Industry, Connected Car Space, Logistics Sector, and the Financial Services. They also offer a free community edition which can be installed on laptops and PCs.
Philip Darringer, the Vice President of Product Management at Kinetica, highlights the potential of the natural language processing in the database and the ease it provides to the user. He believes that the integration of ChatGPT with the Kinetica database can facilitate faster and easier querying of results.
