Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with the chief executives from Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic on Thursday to discuss the responsible development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Overviewing potential concerns associated with the use of the technology, officials will engage in a “frank discussion” about the risks of current and near-term development as per the White House statement to CNBC.
Gina Raimondo, Secretary of Commerce, Jeff Zients, Chief of Staff, Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor, and Arati Prabhakar, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy will join the vice president in the discussion.
OpenAI released the ChatGPT Generative AI chatbot late last year, after which Microsoft integrated its own generative technology with multiple products, investing billions into the company. Google released their own AI chatbot called Bard in February, while Anthropic launched Claude in March.
This meeting is an attempt by the Biden Administration to emphasize the ethical, trustworthy development of AI,but comes as many figures in the tech industry, including noted AI researcher Geoffrey Hinton, caution against the potential risks. Last month, over 27,000 members from the industry signed an open letter, calling for a pause in development of the technology.
Google is a tech giant and a multinational corporation providing services in search, cloud computing, and online advertising. Founded in September 1998, it is one of the BIG FOUR company alongside Amazon, Apple and Microsoft.
