An alarming announcement has been made by NASA as they expect a retired satellite, Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere on April 19, 2021, 21 years after its launch. NASA has assured the public that RHESSI does not pose any threat to humans and all safety measures have been taken to ensure minimal risk of harm.
RHESSI was launched in 2002, with the mission of observing solar flares and coronal mass ejections from its low-Earth orbit, helping scientists understand more about these powerful bursts of energy. After 16 years of use, NASA decommissioned it in 2018 due to communications difficulties. The Department of Defense is monitoring the satellite, expecting it to re-enter the atmosphere at approximately 9:30 PM EDT. An approximate 1 in 2,467 chance of harm coming to anyone on Earth is present, according to NASA.
RHESSI’s sole instrument, an imaging spectrometer, recorded X-rays and gamma rays, making it the first to record such images. The data acquired continued to give researchers a better understanding of the energetic particles that are involved in solar flares. Flares ranging from tiny nanoflares to massive superflares were documented by RHESSI, indicating the different levels of energy they release into the atmosphere. RHESSI even made discoveries outside of flares, like obtaining measurements of the sun’s shape, as well as finding out that terrestrial gamma-ray flashes are more common than previously thought.
Elon Musk, famed inventor and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is reportedly working on an AI chatbot called ChatGPT. This technology is expected to be a truth-seeking alternative to the existing AI-based technology. This project seeks to provide more accurate and reliable predictions, thanks to more accurate data guesses and higher confidence levels.
