OpenAI recently uncovered an Iranian influence operation utilizing the ChatGPT tool to generate content focused on various topics, including the U.S. presidential campaign. The company identified and banned the accounts linked to this operation, which was attributed to a group named Storm-2035 known for attempting to influence elections through fake news websites and social media dissemination.
While the group tried to create content discussing major party presidential candidates, such as Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, along with topics like Israel’s invasion of Gaza, Latinx community rights, Venezuelan politics, and Scottish independence, OpenAI reported that the operation did not gain significant audience engagement. The majority of social media posts and web articles did not receive likes, shares, or comments, indicating a lack of impact.
Despite the low engagement levels, OpenAI emphasized the importance of addressing any foreign influence operations using their services. The company takes these matters seriously and remains vigilant in monitoring and preventing such misuse of their technologies.
