OpenAI is a globally renowned research lab that studies the capabilities of artificial intelligence and its applications. OpenAI has been making headlines with the launch of its AI models such as ChatGPT, the image-generator DALL-E, and the newest of them, GPT-4. The brain behind the success of OpenAI, and leader of its research, product and safety teams is Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer of the lab.
In this Insider Q&A, Mira Murati speaks to the Associated Press about artificial general intelligence, safety measures taken, and regulating artificial intelligence. Murati shares OpenAI’s vision for AI, which is developing autonomous systems that are capable of producing economic output by generalizing across different domains altogether and are safely and ethically aligned to human intentions.
As per Murati, OpenAI is focusing research on expanding the generality of these systems, and to bring this technology to life, there is a need for constant contact with reality, i.e., the real world. To counterbalance any unwanted biases arising in the model training, OpenAI redacts certain data from the initial training, adjusts ratios of images of female and male images in its training dataset, and uses reinforcement learning with human feedback to help the model align with human preferences.
Besides, Murati shares her opinion about the petition calling for a 6-month industry pause on building AI models more powerful than GPT-4, and that safety mechanisms in these AI systems requires thought, exploration and coordination. OpenAI, over the past five years has evolved when it comes to deploying AI systems and Murati believes, it is a positive change.
OpenAI was founded back in 2015 by some of the leading scientists in the field of Artificial Intelligence, such as Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman and many more aiming to focus on researching the safety of artificial intelligence. OpenAI’s mission is to research and develop friendly artificial intelligence, encouraging automated intelligence and promoting economic growth globally.
Mira Murati is the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI. Murati has a long history of working in the AI field, leading project teams and developing engineering products. Prior to joining OpenAI, Murati held various positions at Google, including Technical Program Manager and Production Engineer. Murati holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Chicago. She is an expert on product development, computer science, and Artificial Intelligence, and is passionate about developing autonomous systems with ethical and safe designs.
