Indian Coast Guard Boosts Maritime Security with Acquisition of 14 Advanced FPVs

Date:

India’s Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth ₹1,070 crore with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the acquisition of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard. These FPVs will be designed, developed, and manufactured by MDL as part of the Buy (Indian-IDDM) Category. The delivery of these vessels is expected to take place over a period of 63 months.

The FPVs will be equipped with advanced features and equipment, including multipurpose drones, wirelessly controlled remote water rescue craft lifebuoys, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) capability. These technological advancements will enhance the flexibility and operational edge of the Indian Coast Guard, enabling them to tackle multidimensional challenges effectively.

The acquisition of these FPVs will significantly boost the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard in various areas. They will play a critical role in fisheries protection and monitoring, control and surveillance, anti-smuggling operations, search and rescue operations in shallow waters, assistance to distressed ships and crafts, towing capabilities, monitoring marine pollution response operations, and conducting anti-piracy operations.

The procurement of these FPVs reflects the government’s increased focus on maritime security and reinforces the commitment to safeguarding India’s coastal regions. In addition to enhancing national security, the project will also generate employment opportunities and foster expertise development in the country.

By investing in indigenous production, India aims to strengthen its maritime capabilities while promoting self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The contract with MDL is a significant step towards achieving these objectives.

Overall, the acquisition of these FPVs is a strategic move by the Indian government to enhance maritime security and protect the country’s interests in coastal regions. The versatile capabilities of these vessels will enable the Indian Coast Guard to effectively respond to emerging challenges and ensure the safety and security of India’s maritime domain.
