The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) celebrated a significant milestone on May 31, 2024, with the steel-cutting ceremony for the first Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) at MDL in Mumbai. This event, graced by officials from the ICG and MDL, marks the initiation of construction for the initial NGOPV out of the six ordered by the Ministry of Defence.
In a move demonstrating India’s commitment to enhancing maritime security and fortifying its coastal and offshore territories, the Ministry of Defence inked a contract with MDL in December 2023 to acquire these six advanced patrol vessels at a total cost of ₹1,614.89 crore.
The NGOPVs are specifically designed with cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art machinery to serve multiple roles in maritime security. Some key features of these vessels include:
– Propulsion: Powered by two diesel engines, the NGOPVs can reach a maximum continuous speed of 23 knots and cover distances up to 5,000 nautical miles.
– Helicopter Facilities: Each vessel is equipped with facilities for twin-engine helicopters and staging areas for heavy helicopters, enhancing aerial surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
– Advanced Technology: Multipurpose drones, artificial intelligence capabilities, and wirelessly controlled remote water rescue craft provide operational flexibility and efficiency.
– Additional Features: Advanced communication and navigation systems enable the NGOPVs to undertake various missions such as coastal and offshore patrols, search and rescue operations, and maritime law enforcement.
The first NGOPV is set for delivery in May 2027, underscoring India’s dedication to self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The collaboration between the ICG, MDL, and other stakeholders involved in this project highlights India’s pursuit of indigenous manufacturing and technological advancement in defense.
This endeavor not only showcases India’s drive towards self-sufficiency in defense production but also emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts in bolstering maritime defense capabilities for safeguarding the country’s vast maritime zones.
