At the CON-X 2023 conference held in Palma (Spain) on Wednesday, German futurist and technology expert Gerd Leonhard drew a comparison between the possible impact of the ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence service and the Internet emergence of the 1990s. Leonhard believes this is a powerful tool given it uses a “database of the world” as its foundation. He does, however, voice concerns about how much power ChatGPT holds and how users can become misinformed if they become overly reliant on the service. To avoid this, Leonhard recommends creating regulations to ensure companies follow best practices to protect the originality and creativity of people.
Leonhard believes that while AI can make routine tasks more efficient, it can’t match the quality of advice or understanding of a human. He argues that the best decision makers are the humans who use their solid resources, have a big toolbox and understand what humans need, versus trying to find a shortcut.
At CON-X 23, the theme of ‘Uncut: Now It’s Personal’ was used to highlight how new technologies, analytical and social data management, and personalization influence the tourism industry. Leonhard believes that we will continue to travel to experience relationships, because we aren’t robots based on data and images, but humans who appreciate experiences. He encourages people to develop both technical skills and ‘humanistic’ talents to stay ahead of the competition and keep their jobs.
Gerd Leonhard is an established futurist, speaker and technology expert who is originally from Germany. He is particularly well-known for his thought-provoking reflections on the present and future of human-machine cooperation and business innovation, as well as his support for ethical and responsible use of technologies. He is also a keen promoter of human-centered business approaches. He often speaks at conferences around the world and is the author of several books on the topic of futurology.
