IBM recently announced its commitment to investing up to $45 million in climate adaptation efforts through the IBM Sustainability Accelerator program. The initiative aims to leverage IBM’s technology, including Watson AI and data platforms, to support communities vulnerable to environmental threats worldwide.
The company unveiled a new request for proposals (RFP) for government and non-profit organizations, focusing on technology-driven projects to enhance city resiliency in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11.
With urbanization expected to rise in the coming decades, IBM recognizes the need to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change on sustainable urban development. By increasing its investment in the Sustainability Accelerator program by 50%, IBM aims to strengthen its impact and support more innovative solutions for creating resilient cities.
Moreover, IBM announced a strategic collaboration with EY to enhance the participant experience in the program. EY will provide support during the RFP selection process, offer organizational development coaching, and conduct capacity-building workshops to empower program participants.
Nonprofit and government initiatives focused on city resiliency and urban climate adaptation can apply to the RFP from March 6, 2024, until the submission deadline on April 30, 2024. Selected participants will be announced later in the year, following a thorough evaluation based on various criteria such as support for vulnerable communities, feasibility of proposed solutions, and transparency in measurement and reporting.
The IBM Sustainability Accelerator continues to be a beacon of hope for communities facing environmental challenges, offering innovative solutions powered by AI and data technologies. As the world grapples with the impacts of climate change, IBM’s commitment to supporting resilient cities through this program underscores its dedication to building a more sustainable future for all.
