The chief executive of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has said that society must “co-evolve” with artificial intelligence (AI) if it is to benefit from the technology. Altman made the comments during a recent visit to Singapore, in which he participated in an hour-long discussion at the Singapore Management University. OpenAI has created chatbot ChatGPT, which has so far attracted over 100 million users. Altman suggested that the technology must remain open to public scrutiny to ensure that it is appropriately directed for wider societal benefit. Chatbots are part of OpenAI’s wider mission to develop AI that exceeds human intelligence in a way that benefits the global population.
