How ChatGPT is Transforming Medical Writing: A Le Bonheur Physician Publishes an AI-authored Article

Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence technologies have potential to create a huge impact in the way medical writing is done today. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital located in Memphis, Tennessee and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center have taken a remarkable step in this direction by publishing a Radiology article completely written by a chatbot, ChatGPT.

The article was written and edited by Som Biswas, MD, a Radiology fellow. According to Dr. Biswas, the goal of writing this article was to demonstrate the practical applications and potential of AI-based generative writing, while raising the caveat of it having both its advantages and disadvantages, such as plagiarism, lack of creativity and innovation and potential for errors or bias. However, he also pointed out certain advantages of AI technology, such as the speed in which it can be used to write articles or meeting summaries, extract information from electronic health records and literature search.

Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital is owned by Le Bonheur Healthcare, which provides healthcare services to more than a million people in the city of Memphis. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center offers a variety of healthcare programs, ranging from basic sciences to graduate-level programs. Additionally, the hospital offers a wide range of pediatric specialties and is considered one of the top pediatric hospitals in the nation, according to the U.S. News and World Report.

Som Biswas, MD, is a Radiology fellow at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University and completed the Diagnostic Radiology residency program at Weill Cornell Medical Center. His research focuses on AI-driven development of clinical decision support algorithms to improve patient care. He was the first physician to publish an article in Radiology using ChatGPT as the sole writer, in order to demonstrate the potential and practical applications of AI-based generative writing.
