With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) within the K-12 education space, it’s no surprise that students and teachers have already implemented it into their learning. ChatGPT is a popular AI program currently being used among schools and is helping to enhance the learning process. While students and teachers are certainly aware of its capabilities, parents are still lagging behind in knowledge. A recent poll from the nonprofit Common Sense showed that only 30% of parents have used ChatGPT or heard a lot about it, compared to the nearly 60% of students aged 12-18 that have. Moreover, this lack of awareness has caused some unease as students admit to using ChatGPT without their parents or teachers being informed.
Due to this, it is important to make sure parents are informed and kept in the loop. It is crucial that parents understand the potential of AI to benefit their children and help promote learning. The survey found that 68% of parents and 84% of students believe their education systems should invest in AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT in order to improve learning. 82% of parents believe that AI has the potential to both greatly benefit the world or cause great harm. That’s why 61% of parents believe that ChatGPT should be limited until safety measures are put in place.
As school systems navigate the implications of AI-powered technology, it is important that administrators and educators keep parents informed. To do so, ChatGPT recommends taking the following action steps: developing a clear set of regulations for ChatGPT usage; making sure parents understand how the AI can help students learn; providing additional resources such as workshops or information sessions; implementing feedback systems in order to continuously assess how ChatGPT is being used in the classroom; and creating a dialogue between teachers, parents, and students to ensure the best possible results.
ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can help modernize the education system, but it is equally important that parents understand how to best utilize it and regulate its use at home. By staying informed, parents can help students use ChatGPT correctly and follow the regulations set in place to maximize its learning potential.
