Hackers from a group known as NullBulge have claimed responsibility for leaking internal communications from Walt Disney Co., citing concerns over the company’s handling of artist contracts, approach to AI, and disregard for consumers. The hacktivist group stated that they breached Disney’s internal messaging channels, resulting in the leak of approximately 1.2 terabytes of information.
The compromised data included details about unreleased projects, marketing strategies, studio technology, and job applicants. NullBulge, based in Russia, revealed that they accessed Disney’s system through an individual with Slack access who initially attempted to expel the hackers. Slack, a popular workplace messaging platform, was utilized for internal discussions by the company.
Disney has confirmed that they are investigating the matter, while NullBulge claims to advocate for artists’ rights and fair compensation for their work. This breach underscores growing concerns in the entertainment industry regarding the impact of AI on workers. Labor unions representing Hollywood actors, writers, and crew members have pushed for restrictions on AI usage, with the technology becoming a focal point in recent negotiations between unions and studios during strikes.
As California lawmakers consider regulating AI through legislation, tech companies are urging caution against overregulation. The incident involving Disney and NullBulge sheds light on the complexities surrounding data security, intellectual property, and the evolving landscape of AI in the entertainment sector.
