According to a report by The Business Journals, AI-related jobs are rapidly increasing while other jobs are being cut by companies. The report cites jobs platform Adzuna, which found a significant spike in job postings relating to generative AI technology, with 1,496 jobs citing the term in May, compared to just three in May 2022. Similarly, job ads on Adzuna citing ChatGPT, a popular AI tool, increased from 845 in May 2022 to 1,440 in May this year. According to the research, the average salary listed for job postings citing ChatGPT was $133,000, while generative AI jobs had an average salary of $146,244.
The article cites a survey by ResumeBuilder.com, which found that 91% of companies that were hiring wanted workers with ChatGPT experience. Although the research predicted that most of these jobs would be in technical fields, it found that 55% of jobs requiring ChatGPT skills come from non-technical industries such as advertising services, financial services, higher education, and manufacturing. Technical industries accounted for 45% of the jobs.
However, some companies are cutting jobs due to the growing use of AI-related tools, with Challenger Gray & Christmas Inc. reporting that all 3,900 individuals laid off so far this year were in the tech industry. Despite this, a survey by Beautiful.ai of 3,000 U.S. workers in management positions found that about 66% of managers would prefer to replace employees with AI tools if the work was comparable.
Meanwhile, IBM Corp. CEO Arvind Krishna stated his company intends to replace nearly 8,000 jobs with AI over the next few years, potentially taking over up to 30% of non-customer-facing roles. However, experts warn companies should proceed with caution when using AI to cut labor costs. Goldman Sachs found that the new wave of AI tools could expose about 300 million full-time jobs globally to automation over the coming years, depending on how advanced the tools become.
While there are concerns about job losses, AI-related jobs are expected to continue increasing, with businesses posting more job ads citing generative AI, ChatGPT, and chatbots. Experts predict that the impact of generative AI and ChatGPT will lead to creative destruction within industries, with new jobs emerging alongside job losses. Job seekers who acquire ChatGPT and other AI skills will be well positioned for the future, according to Luminos CEO Chas Cooper.
