In a groundbreaking move for British politics, an artificial intelligence candidate known as AI Steve is set to appear on the ballot for the United Kingdom’s general election next month. Represented by Sussex businessman Steve Endacott, AI Steve will run alongside traditional candidates to represent constituents in the Brighton Pavilion area of Brighton and Hove.
Steve Endacott, the chairman of Neural Voice — a company specializing in personalized voice assistants — developed AI Steve as part of his effort to create a politician who is always accessible to constituents. In a recent interview with an international media outlet, he described AI Steve as the AI co-pilot, emphasizing that he is the real politician going into Parliament but is guided by his co-pilot.
AI Steve, one of seven AI characters created by Neural Voice, is designed to enhance political engagement by allowing constituents to ask questions and share opinions on policies through its website. Using a large language model, AI Steve provides answers based on a database of party policies. If faced with unfamiliar issues, AI Steve conducts internet research to suggest new policies to the voters.
Endacott’s unique approach involves using AI to maintain constant communication with voters, ensuring that their views are considered in the decision-making process. By interacting with AI Steve, constituents can discuss policies and voice concerns, creating a responsive and present politician.
The upcoming general election will witness AI Steve running for the Brighton Pavilion seat, a constituency previously held by prominent politicians. Endacott, who unsuccessfully ran in a local election under the Conservative Party in 2022, is hopeful that the distinctiveness of his candidacy will attract more attention and support this time around.
Endacott plans to involve thousands of validators from Brighton in the decision-making process, particularly targeting individuals with long daily commutes. Through weekly scoring of policies by validators, any policy receiving over 50% support will become an official party policy, reflecting the voters’ decisions.
If elected, AI Steve would make history as the first AI legislator in public office, paving the way for future innovations in politics. This development sets a precedent for the integration of artificial intelligence in governance, showcasing the potential of technology in shaping political landscapes.
