Government Ministry Bans Use of AI Technology by Staff

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in New Zealand has blocked its staff from using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, including ChatGPT, due to data and privacy risks. Similar actions have been taken by Apple, Samsung, and large banks and technology firms globally. The ministry cited concerns that staff could put sensitive information into AI tools which could resurface. There are no AI-specific regulations in New Zealand, and documents from MBIE reveal that there are no rules or guidelines for all government agencies about staff use AI tools. The government is working on guidance for its agencies.
