Government Forms AI Taskforce to Explore Future of Work Impact

Date:

The Government of India has established a task force to analyze the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the future of work, announced Labour Secretary Sumita Dawra during an industry event in Hyderabad.

Labor Secretary Dawra emphasized the necessity for further research in understanding how AI will shape the future of work. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) stated that the government has formed a task force to investigate AI’s implications on the labor market.

In a statement by the CII, it was disclosed that Labour Secretary Dawra, along with other top officials from the Ministry of Labor and Employment, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO), and the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), engaged in an interaction with over 300 industry members in Telangana.

During the event, Dawra underscored the reforms promoting ease of doing business, including the decriminalization of labor laws, enhancing female workforce participation, social security measures, and labor welfare initiatives aimed at fostering inclusive growth in India.

Highlighting India’s demographic dividend and labor reforms as driving forces for future growth, Dawra projected that India’s GDP could reach $33 trillion by 2047 from the current $3 trillion. She cited that the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) recorded the creation of around eight crore new jobs in India over the last five years, with growth propelled by Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and startups.

The Labor Secretary also noted the significant presence of gig workers in India, estimated at one crore, with expectations to provide employment opportunities to approximately 2.4 crore individuals by 2030. She mentioned the consolidation of 29 labor laws into four Labor Codes, further advancing the ease of doing business in the country.
