Google’s AI Algorithm Shows Promise in Reducing Contrails on American Airlines Flights
A recent collaboration between tech giant Google and American Airlines has yielded promising results in the reduction of contrails, or condensation trails, on flights. The potential to reduce the formation of contrails at a cost of $5-25 per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) makes it a cost-effective measure for tackling global warming.
The significance of this development cannot be understated, as contrail clouds account for about 35% of aviation’s contribution to global warming, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2022 report.
