Google has announced an open beta release for passkeys support in Google Workspace and Cloud accounts. This comes a month after the support was first extended to consumer Google accounts. By using their phones, desktops or laptops, passkey users can sign into websites and apps with the same login credentials they use for their devices. This method replaces authentication codes from apps or SMS and makes it less likely for adversaries to gain access to accounts inadvertently. Furthermore, passkeys have the advantage of being resistant to phishing, making them safer than traditional passwords. According to Google, using passkeys is twice as fast and four times less error-prone than using passwords. The rollout will be slow, with admins getting the ability to enable passkeys for their users over the next few weeks.
