Google has announced an update to its chatbot technology, Bard, with the introduction of the new Gemini AI. This comes after Google was caught off-guard by the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT last year. While Gemini has been designed to analyze images and sounds, these features will not be integrated into the Bard chatbot until a later date. Google has developed three versions of Gemini, each equipped with a different set of skills. The largest, Ultra, is set to tackle complex tasks and will be released next year. The midtier offering, Pro, will be rolled out to various Google services, including the Bard chatbot. The smallest version, Nano, will power select features on the Pixel 8 Pro smartphone, such as audio summarization and suggested text responses in WhatsApp.
Gemini is categorized as a large language model (LLM), a complex mathematical system that can learn skills by analyzing vast amounts of data. It has been trained on digital books, Wikipedia articles, online bulletin boards, images, and sounds. Gemini is considered a multimodal system as it can analyze and respond to both images and sounds. However, this aspect of the technology will not be available to consumers until next year. It is important to note that Gemini, like similar systems, is prone to errors and may provide inaccurate information or even create fictional content.
Google Cloud is keen to offer Gemini to its clients as it competes against OpenAI and Microsoft for deals. In response to OpenAI’s recent internal turmoil, Google Cloud has even created a migration plan to entice OpenAI customers with comparable pricing and additional cloud credits.
Although Google has been working to reclaim its position as an AI leader, CEO Sundar Pichai believes there is ample room in the market for all AI providers.
