Google Expands AI Features to Compete with Rivals
In a bid to keep up with competitors like Microsoft and OpenAI, Google is rolling out new AI features for its product line, including the upcoming Pixel 8 series. One of the latest additions is the Circle to Search feature, which was previously exclusive to Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series but will now be available on both the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro phones. This feature allows users to select and search for objects in photos by circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping on them.
Google is also introducing the ability to measure body temperature using the Pixel 8 Pro’s built-in thermometer. This feature, which is touted as medical-grade, utilizes infrared radiation technology to accurately measure body temperature. The temperature sensor, located near the camera, can measure temperatures up to 392°F (200°C) and can even detect extreme cold as low as -4°F (-20°C). Users can sync the readings to their Fitbit accounts for convenience.
Not only is Google focusing on its new Pixel 8 series, but it’s also bringing new features to its older Pixel phones. The Pixel 6 and above series will soon have access to Magic Compose, an AI-powered tool that can rewrite drafted messages in different styles. This feature will work on-device for the Pixel 8 Pro, while other Pixel phones will rely on cloud technology to enhance their messages, making them more professional or concise.
Additionally, Google is renaming its Nearby Share feature to Quick Share, aligning it with the naming convention used by both Google and Samsung phones. Quick Share allows users to easily send content to nearby devices running on Android, ChromeOS, or Windows.
In addition to these device-specific updates, Google is also introducing new AI features for its Chrome Browser. Three experimental AI features are being rolled out, aiming to enhance convenience, personalization, and creativity during web browsing. These features are currently available for Chrome on Macs and Windows PCs within the U.S., with enterprise and educational accounts excluded.
With these new AI-driven features, Google aims to stay competitive in the market by offering innovative and convenient tools for its users. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see what other advancements Google brings to its products in the near future.
