Google has expanded its Translate service by adding over 25 new African languages using artificial intelligence (AI). This move represents the largest expansion of African languages by Google Translate to date. Among the new languages added are Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Wolof, Siswati, Tshivenda, Afar, NKo, Tamazight, and more.
This expansion covers a significant portion of the African population, with over 614 million speakers benefiting from the addition of these languages. Google’s commitment to supporting a wide range of languages through its 1,000 Languages Initiative has led to the integration of major world languages as well as those spoken by smaller communities and Indigenous people.
The addition of these languages is part of Google’s efforts to bridge language barriers and enhance understanding between people worldwide. In parallel with these language additions, Google and the Creative Industries Initiative for Africa (C.I.I.F.A.) have launched the Engage Nigeria program, aimed at equipping 8,000 youth with creative industry skills. This initiative is part of the broader Skill Sprint program targeting digital skill development among Nigerian women and youth.
The Engage Nigeria program, now in its second cohort, offers training in various creative industry fields such as music business, event planning, cinematography, animation, and graphic design. With a focus on mentorship and networking opportunities, participants are well-prepared to thrive in the competitive creative economy. Through partnerships with organizations like the GOYF Community Digitech Hub and support from Google.org, these initiatives are instrumental in empowering the next generation of creative professionals in Africa.
Overall, Google’s language expansion efforts and programs like Engage Nigeria are not only enhancing digital skills but also fostering creativity and innovation among African youth. These initiatives mark significant strides in promoting inclusivity, diversity, and opportunities within the continent’s creative and digital landscape. Joining forces with local organizations and leveraging AI technology, Google continues to make a positive impact in bridging the digital divide and empowering communities worldwide.
