Today Google announced the release of their new security technology, passkeys, across all major platforms. Passkeys make it possible for users to access websites and apps without needing to enter in a password or complete two-step verification every time. When signing-in, a user can opt to create a passkey that can be stored in a secure solution like Google Password Manager. Through this, users can take advantage of fingerprinting, facial recognition or a local pin to access their account securely.
Passkeys offer greater security than traditional passwords as they cannot be stolen, making them resistant to credential theft, phishing, and social engineering scams. Google are not the only company taking this step as many big-name vendors such as Microsoft and Apple have committed to developing a common passwordless sign-in standard as well. Currently, there are technologies such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) to help enhance online account security, but they come with their own risks; they are susceptible to SIM swap attacks, and users must go through an extra step of authentication. With passkeys, users can log in with biometric data and spare themselves the inconvenience and the risk of an account takeover attempt.
Google is joining top executives in San Francisco on July 11-12 to discuss how leaders can integrate and optimize AI investments for success. By introducing new security measures such as passkeys and passwordless sign-in options, Google is opening up a variety of new digital opportunities for their users. With modern security options, digital interactions become safer and more seamless for all.
