Technology giant Google announced its collaboration with the Election Commission of India (ECI) to provide easy access to essential voting information on Google Search ahead of the upcoming general election in India. This initiative aims to assist voters in finding critical details related to the election process efficiently.
In an effort to combat misinformation, Google is utilizing AI models and implementing stringent policies for election-related advertising on its platforms. The company is also supporting the India Election Fact-Checking Collective known as Shakti, which consists of news publishers and fact-checkers. Together, they will work on detecting online misinformation, including deepfakes, and establishing a shared repository for news publishers to address misinformation effectively.
Google emphasized its commitment to supporting the election process by ensuring the availability of high-quality information for voters, protecting its platforms from abuse, and assisting users in navigating AI-generated content. During the election season, YouTube will display various election information panels, including guidelines on voter registration, voting procedures, and candidate profiles. Additionally, YouTube’s recommendation system will prioritize content from authoritative sources on its homepage, search results, and Up Next panel.
With millions of eligible voters gearing up for the general election in India, Google’s initiatives aim to empower voters with accurate information, counter misinformation, and promote transparency in the electoral process.
