Google Opens SGE in Search Labs to U.S. Teens for Safer and Faster Exploration
Google is taking steps to enhance the search experience for teenagers in the United States by opening up access to SGE (Search Generative Exploration) in Search Labs. With a focus on safety and speed, Google is allowing teens aged 13-17 to explore topics more efficiently and discover information in a safer environment.
Through the Google app or Chrome desktop, teenagers with a Google Account can now sign up for Search Labs and gain access to SGE, a tool designed to facilitate faster information retrieval. SGE utilizes generative AI to enable teens to ask questions that surpass the capabilities of regular search engines, encouraging deeper exploration and learning.
In a bid to ensure the safety of young users, Google has strengthened safeguards within SGE to prevent exposure to inappropriate content such as illegal substances, age-restricted material, and bullying. This commitment to safety is based on extensive research and input from teen development experts. Feedback and continuous system improvements will be an ongoing process, with expert input playing a crucial role in refining and enhancing the safeguards implemented in SGE. To further aid in responsible use, Google has also provided its AI Literacy Guide for teens and parents to refer to.
To enhance information reliability, Google has integrated information literacy tools into SGE. Users can now access the About this result feature, which provides valuable context regarding how SGE generated the responses. Furthermore, this feature will soon extend to individual links within the responses, allowing users to explore additional sources and verify the information presented. Google is committed to improving the quality of SGE responses, particularly when queries contain false or offensive premises. The AI model will be trained to better detect and respond to such queries.
Google acknowledges the limitations of the technology and is dedicated to ongoing improvement. While progress has been made in enhancing SGE’s protective measures, the company will continue working towards refining and optimizing the system.
Starting this week, teenagers aged 13-17 with Google Accounts in the United States can access SGE in Search Labs. This development aims to empower young users to explore and discover information in a safer and faster way, fostering their curiosity and enabling them to delve deeper into various topics.
Hema Budaraju, Senior Director of Product Management at Google, expressed excitement about these updates and emphasized the commitment to provide a high-quality search experience for teenagers. With the introduction of SGE in Search Labs, Google is taking a significant step in creating a safer and more enriching search environment for young users.
