Google Introduces AI-Powered ‘SGE while Browsing’ to Summarize Web Articles Faster
Google is testing a new feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE) while browsing, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate key points for web articles. This experimental feature aims to help users navigate and digest information online more efficiently. With the click of a button, it can break down lengthy web pages into concise bullet-point summaries, making it easier for users to get to the core of an article within seconds.
The SGE while browsing feature builds upon Google’s existing use of generative AI in answering queries on its search engine. By harnessing AI technology, Google aims to revolutionize the way users read web articles, allowing them to quickly grasp the main ideas without having to read the entire content.
Designed specifically for long-form articles, the feature appears as an option called Get AI-powered key points while scrolling through a page on Chrome using a mobile device. Clicking this option enables Chrome to transform the web page’s content into a list of key points, providing users with a condensed summary.
Moreover, Google aims to assist users in diving deeper into the article with the Explore on page feature. Users can discover the questions that the article answers and easily navigate to the relevant sections for more information.
To ensure accuracy, Google acknowledges that the quality of the AI-generated summaries may vary. Users are advised to verify the information from other reliable sources as well.
However, this new feature may face resistance from website publishers who want to retain users on their pages for as long as possible. As a result, SGE while browsing will only work on articles that are freely accessible on the web and not on paywalled pages. Additionally, publishers have the option to opt out of the SGE.
Users interested in trying out this feature can visit the SGE project page and choose to opt in. For desktop users, opting in will create a G icon in the upper-right corner of the Chrome browser, allowing them to generate AI-powered highlights. Although the feature is still in development and may have some glitches, Google is actively working to improve its functionality.
Embracing generative AI, Google aims to enhance the online information consumption experience. By providing concise summaries and additional tools for users to explore web articles, this feature can help individuals quickly find the information they seek while maintaining a balanced view. However, users should remain cautious and fact-check information from diverse sources to ensure accuracy and reliability.
