Google Bard Unleashed: AI Chatbot Raises Privacy Concerns with Access to Personal Info
Google has recently announced a significant expansion of its AI chatbot tool, known as Google Bard, which now has the ability to access users’ personal information from Google Workspace apps such as Gmail, Docs, and Drive. With the new Bard Extensions, the chatbot can now search within a user’s Google accounts to retrieve relevant information from various tools like Gmail, Docs, Drive, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Flights and hotels. For example, Bard can draft a cover letter using details from a resume stored on Google Drive or gather travel details from a user’s inbox and create a comprehensive trip planning document. Users can simply ask Bard in natural language for specific information, and Google will reply based on the contents of their emails or documents stored in Google Drive.
This integration marks the first time that a language model product is truly integrating with users’ personal data. However, Google clarifies that integrating AI with personal data does not mean that it is using the data to train its large-language model (LLM). Instead, the data serves as input to the AI model, which is already trained.
Google emphasizes that the use of its extensions is optional, and user content is not accessed by human reviewers or used by Bard to show advertisements. Despite this assurance, the increased automation through AI raises concerns about potential job impacts in certain fields.
In addition to data access, Google is expanding Bard’s capabilities by allowing users to double-check its responses using the Google it button.
