G20 Meeting Highlights Importance of Inclusion and Equality in Digital Transformation
Experts from 68 countries recently gathered for an online event to discuss the crucial role of inclusion in digital transformation and the need for international collaboration to drive the global adoption of digital solutions. During the event, it was emphasized that inclusive digital transformation is essential for ensuring that all individuals have access to public services and opportunities in the digital age.
Brazil was recognized for its significant progress in the digital transformation of public services, with initiatives such as Gov.Br leading the way. With 156 million registered users and over 90% of federal services available online, Brazil has set an example for promoting digital inclusion. Initiatives like the VLibras platform, which offers automated translation of digital text into Libras, further demonstrate Brazil’s commitment to accessibility for all, including individuals with disabilities.
Key speakers at the event stressed the importance of governments being proactive in addressing barriers to access and offering immediate solutions to bridge inequalities in digital services. Siim Sikkut, former CIO of the Estonian government, raised critical questions about data sharing for enhancing public services and highlighted the need for organizational readiness to leverage data effectively.
Rodrigo Assumpção, President of Dataprev, advocated for building a national data infrastructure that involves government, civil society, and private sector collaboration. He emphasized the importance of data availability for economic development, research, and societal information.
Jutta Treviranus, Director of the Inclusive Design Research Centre, underscored the value of diversity in designing digital tools and the challenge of achieving true inclusion. She urged governments, companies, and academic institutions to prioritize human needs over scalability and market efficiency when designing digital solutions.
Amandeep Gill, UN Technical Envoy, unveiled plans for a global digital pact aimed at creating an inclusive, open, and sustainable digital future. He stressed the importance of connectivity and data protection to ensure a level playing field in the digital economy.
