Independent developer Liam Swayne has utilized AI software ChatGPT to give Game of Thrones fans an alternative ending to the highly divisive final season. Swayne used ChatGPT to write a version of both The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, the proposed final novel in George R.R. Martin’s series. The AI-generated novels offer readers a fresh perspective on how the story might conclude.
To create the novels, Swayne started by providing ChatGPT with a prompt to generate an outline for the first chapter. He then repeated this process until he had 45 chapter outlines. These outlines were then fed back to ChatGPT to acquire more detailed outlines. Finally, the extended outlines were used as prompts to generate the chapters themselves.
Reflecting on the finished books, Swayne praised ChatGPT for its ability to maintain character continuity. Notably, the AI included the character Illyrio in the opening paragraphs and later reintroduced him for a scene over a hundred thousand words later. ChatGPT also demonstrated skill in creating plot twists. For instance, Jon Connington turns against Daenerys, and Bran discovers that The Wall serves as not only a physical barrier but also a mystical shield against the Night King.
However, ChatGPT fell short in emulating George R.R. Martin’s renowned knack for surprising character deaths. Unfortunately for readers craving unexpected twists, the AI did not kill off any significant characters in either of the novels, despite prompts to do so.
While fans eagerly await the release of the official Winds of Winter, they can still enjoy new material from the world of Westeros. The second season of House of the Dragon, a spin-off series set in the Game of Thrones universe, is currently in production and has not been delayed by the actors’ strike. Additionally, a new spin-off series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight has been confirmed, though development is currently paused due to the writers’ strike.
