Game Controllers and ChatGPT: Exciting Innovations from CES 2022
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas has once again showcased groundbreaking innovations in technology. This year’s event saw major brands unveiling unexpected plans for the future, including the integration of game controllers and AI chatbots into vehicles.
Sony, known for its gaming consoles, captured attention by driving a vehicle onto the stage controlled by a PlayStation 5 controller. The Afeela prototype electric vehicle, a collaboration between Sony and Honda, is powered by Microsoft’s artificial intelligence technology. Packed with sensors, the car aims to enhance driving safety and create 3D maps using AI. While the demonstration featured game controllers for driving, Sony Honda Mobility president Izumi Kawanishi emphasized that software could define new functions for the vehicle.
Microsoft’s AI technology will empower Afeela vehicles, enabling them to identify obstacles and customize the driving experience. Jessica Hawk, Microsoft’s vice-president of data, AI, and digital applications, expressed excitement about the potential of generative AI and cloud-scale computing, transforming the vehicle experience from traditional button controls to conversation and multi-modal interaction.
German automaker Volkswagen also unveiled its plans to incorporate ChatGPT, a generative AI technology, into its vehicles. By adding ChatGPT to its in-car voice assistant, IDA, Volkswagen aims to provide drivers of its ID, Tiguan, Passat, and Golf models with enhanced conversational capabilities. As a standard feature, the chatbot will help answer general knowledge questions and provide information about the vehicle using natural language. Volkswagen will introduce ChatGPT via an automatic software update later this year, making them the first volume manufacturer to adopt this innovative technology.
Further innovating the electric vehicle market, Kia announced their Platform Beyond Vehicle technology at CES. This modular and customizable approach will allow users to transform their vehicles from a taxi during the day to a delivery van at night. By connecting interchangeable parts to a vehicle base using electromagnetic and mechanical coupling, Kia’s Platform Beyond Vehicle aims to provide users with versatile options for their electric vehicles. The development of this technology is set to begin in 2025, with the PV5 van being the first vehicle to feature this transformative capability.
CES attendees can also look forward to Honda’s unveiling of a new range of electric vehicles, as the company announced its plans to exclusively sell electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles by 2040.
