New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has appointed former White House adviser Dave Cole as the state’s new chief innovation officer, according to an announcement made on Wednesday. Cole, who served as an adviser during Barack Obama’s first term, will be responsible for enhancing the design and delivery of policies and services to residents, businesses, and institutions in the state. He takes over from Beth Noveck, who has been appointed as the state’s first chief AI strategist.
Cole expressed his commitment to delivering government services that meet the needs of residents, which he believes will help restore trust and uplift communities. He also highlighted Governor Murphy’s dedication to establishing New Jersey as the Innovation State, which has created opportunities for starting and operating local businesses, thereby promoting economic growth across the state.
Prior to his appointment, Cole served as a data director for Obama’s presidential campaign and held positions as a deputy director of new media technology and a senior technology adviser in the White House. He later joined Mapbox, a software firm, where he spent nearly three years before returning to work in the public sector as a New Jersey Democrat. Cole played a pivotal role in leading the state’s COVID-19 vaccination program and co-founded the Resident Experience Initiative, aimed at streamlining digital services in New Jersey.
Meanwhile, Beth Noveck, the former chief innovation officer, transitioned into her new role as the state’s chief AI strategist. During Governor Murphy’s State of the State address on January 9, he expressed gratitude to Noveck for her contribution to training government workers in using generative AI to improve access to benefits and services for New Jersey residents. Murphy acknowledged the importance of advancing AI in both the private and public sectors and emphasized his vision for New Jersey to lead the nation in this realm.
Governor Murphy expressed confidence in Dave Cole’s expertise and experience, noting that he will be a valuable addition to the Office of Innovation. Murphy also commended Noveck for her service as the state’s first chief innovation officer and extended his well wishes as she takes on the role of chief AI strategist.
