Federal Government Calls for Top AI Researchers of Nigerian Descent to Help Shape National Strategy
The Nigerian Federal Government has issued a call for applications from highly skilled researchers of Nigerian descent worldwide to assist in the development of the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. In an announcement made by Dr Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the government aims to tap into the expertise of Nigerian researchers globally to create an inclusive and innovative AI strategy for the country.
The initiative builds upon the work done by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in developing a National AI Strategy. By expanding its co-creation approach, the government intends to engage top AI researchers of Nigerian descent to contribute their expertise to the strategy development process.
Dr Bosun Tijani emphasized the importance of this endeavor, stating that AI has become a transformative technology with the potential to revolutionize production and service delivery. According to recent research, AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. This includes $3 trillion from increased productivity and $9.1 trillion from new products and services.
Moreover, the International Finance Corporation projects that the strategic adoption of AI could add up to $234 billion to Africa’s GDP by 2030. Nigeria, with its rapidly growing technology start-up ecosystem, is well-positioned to leverage AI for economic diversification and inclusive growth. To achieve these goals, a national AI strategy that reflects responsible and human-centered principles is crucial.
The call for top researchers aims to curate a list of individuals who have made significant contributions to the Nigerian market. The government welcomes recommendations for both Nigerian and non-Nigerian researchers who have conducted relevant work and research in Nigeria. The aim is to foster collaboration and create a national AI strategy that addresses pressing national issues and stimulates innovative solutions.
The development of the National AI Strategy recognizes the potential benefits and challenges associated with AI governance. As algorithms are deployed in critical sectors like healthcare, finance, and security, concerns surrounding ethics, bias, transparency, job automation, and privacy are emerging. Policymakers and researchers agree that a human-centered approach is necessary to ensure fairness and accountability in AI systems for all citizens, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
Nigeria seeks to pioneer ethical and inclusive AI innovation that promotes welfare and expands opportunities for its citizens. By taking a collaborative approach and leveraging the collective expertise of researchers of Nigerian descent worldwide, the government aims to steer the AI revolution towards achieving national goals such as job creation, social inclusion, and sustainable development.
This call for applications signifies the government’s commitment to harnessing the power of AI and positioning Nigeria as an innovation leader in Africa. With the support of top AI researchers, Nigeria aspires to create an AI strategy that remains true to its national objectives and reflects its unique challenges and opportunities.
The Federal Government’s invitation to researchers of Nigerian descent globally is a testament to the government’s recognition of the invaluable contributions these individuals can make in shaping the future of AI in Nigeria. With their expertise and collaboration, Nigeria aims to embrace AI technology responsibly and lay a foundation for a prosperous and inclusive digital future.
