A fake Pixar movie circulating on Twitter has caused a stir and sparked outrage among users. The animated photo claims to depict Pixar’s latest film about George Floyd, the African-American man who tragically lost his life at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis in May 2020. However, it has been confirmed that this is not true.
The disturbing animation portrays a white police officer kneeling on the back of a black man, reminiscent of the tragic events that led to George Floyd’s death. It shows people standing in the background, seemingly cheering on the incident. The image has garnered more than 5.7 million views on Twitter, with the caption Pixar really out here making a movie called ‘Floyd’.
Despite its convincing appearance, the animation is not associated with Pixar in any way. Upon closer inspection, it appears to have been created using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Clever computer algorithms can generate images using text prompts, such as the phrase George Floyd cartoon. While some users quickly recognized the falsity of the image, others were fooled into believing that the movie was real.
The circulating animation has faced widespread condemnation for its disrespectful nature. Twitter users have expressed their anger, with one person describing it as horrifically racist and another commenting, AI has gone too far. The fake image undermines the seriousness of George Floyd’s tragic death and the movement against police brutality.
George Floyd, originally from Houston, had moved to Minneapolis in 2014, where he worked as a truck driver and bouncer. His death ignited protests against police brutality towards Black people, which spread globally. The phrase I can’t breathe, uttered by Floyd as he pleaded for his life, became a rallying cry for justice. His murderer, former police officer Derek Chauvin, was convicted on three charges, including second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin is currently serving a 22 and a half-year prison sentence.
Floyd has become a symbol of the Black Lives Matter movement, which strives for justice, healing, and freedom for Black individuals worldwide. However, the circulation of the fake Pixar movie image only serves to detract from the important issues at hand.
