AI is a rapidly advancing technology making its way into society today, in both positive and negative ways. ChatGPT, one of the latest forms of artificial intelligence, is beginning to make a significant impact, bringing inevitable growing pains alongside it. University at Buffalo’s Artificial Intelligence Director, David Doermann, weighed in on the importance of incorporating it into society instead of trying to isolate it.
ChatGPT has been used for many beneficial purposes, from making people’s lives easier to helping with deep fakes in music or dubbing speech over political figures/celebrities, it’s causing a stir on social media as it’s becomes harder to tell what’s real and what isn’t. It can write essays, solve problems for assignments, and more in moments, causing for it to be a go-to for students seeking an easy cheat. Though, UB is working to address these growing issues, as are college’s all across the country, by finding ways to regulate the use of ChatGPT rather than completely impose a ban on the technology.
AI has the potential to drastically improve our lives, but its development is still in its infant stages. David Doermann suggests that one of the next steps for artificial intelligence will be developing human emotion. This would include digitizing complex human feelings and communicating it through computer systems; so, not only would AI potentially be a tool for people seeking mental health counseling, but it could really deepen the understanding of human behavior and relationships.
The University at Buffalo is working to get the most out of this new technology and ensure it works for and not against us. With the help of their Artificial Intelligence Director and many others, ChatGPT is sure to continue to make advances into society for the betterment of us all.
