TEDxUWMadison Introduces New AI Ideas with Talks from Four Experts
On November 6, TEDxUWMadison, organized by President Melina Zaraboulas, brought together students and faculty at the University of Wisconsin for a series of talks by four AI experts. This marked the university’s first TEDx event since 2020, and the talks focused on exploring the future possibilities of AI.
Sharon Li, an Assistant Professor of Computer Sciences at UW, kicked off the event with her research on AI safety in unpredictable situations. Li emphasized the importance of recognizing unfamiliar scenarios and incorporating human intervention to ensure safety and trust in the age of AI.
Another speaker, Martin Lichtman, a quantum mechanic, delved into the world of quantum computing. Lichtman explained how this advanced technology offers a higher level of computation, showcasing its potential in solving complex problems in fields such as chemistry and materials science. He emphasized the significance of understanding the unique perspective of quantum computing.
Patrick McDaniel, a Tsun-Ming Shih Professor of Computer Sciences, provided a thought-provoking take on AI by addressing the potential uses, vulnerabilities, and challenges associated with it. McDaniel stressed the importance of developing norms, public policy, and protective measures to fully leverage the benefits of AI while safeguarding individuals and society.
Lori Mazor, the founder and CEO of Synthetivity, a consultancy firm specializing in Generative Artificial Intelligence, shared her insights on the intersection of AI and creativity. Mazor highlighted the importance of understanding the compassionate side of AI and how it can teach society about humanity. She illustrated her points by using the analogy of temperature and how algorithms act as thermostats, adjusting AI’s operating conditions.
TEDxUWMadison has been hosting talks since 2012, and this year’s event aimed to shed light on the future of AI. The talks provided a platform for experts to share their research, ideas, and perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of the possibilities and challenges brought by AI.
