At the 2023 TED conference in Vancouver, Canada, Imran Chaudhri, former lead designer of Apple, demonstrated a futuristic artificial intelligence (AI) device. Chaudhri had a vision for subtle devices and a world with no screens. During his presentation, he showed the power of such a tool by appearing to receive a call in an unconventional way. Zarif Ali, a Toronto-based freelance journalist, tweeted about the demo and shared the video which showed Chaudhri receiving the call notification in the palm of his hand.
Chaudhri, who is also the co-founder from Humane, believes that AI will be crucial to the future of device design. In the demonstration, Chaudhri asked his device to tell him where he could buy a gift before leaving town, and the device quickly provided a response. In addition, he showed the device’s capacity to translate sentences, which it repeated in his own AI-generated voice.
Humane recently raised a $100 million Series C round of funding for their project. Kindred Ventures led the round, with additional investors such as OpenAI founder Sam Altman. Humane representatives say that they will be releasing more information about the device in the coming months.
Imran Chaudhri, formerly a designer at Apple, is best known for his influential work in consumer technology. His mission is to create devices that blend into our lives without being noticed. Along with his wife Bethany Bongiorno, a fellow Apple alum, the two have joined forces in creating Humane. The couple has taken a revolutionary approach to device design, aiming to make their tools as intuitive and seamless as possible. With the AI device demonstration, Chaudhri has taken a major step in achieving this goal.
